In 1678 Danby had endorsed King Charles's demand for payment by King Louis of France to avoid war. This issue was related to the hysteria surrounding the Popish Plot. A faction in Parliament treated this support as an assumption of royal authority, which led eventually to his impeachment and imprisonment in the Tower for five years.
