Boston: T.G. Bradford, 1835. unbound. Map. Engraving with original hand coloring. Image measures 7.75 x 10" This small 1835 map of China covers from the Birman Empire to Jesso or Hokkaido in Japan. Includes Korea and a vaguely mapped Taiwan (Taiouan), given the lack of cartographic knowledge of the region at the time. The map notes several important towns, cities, regions, rivers, mountains and other topographical features. The Great Wall of China is identified. The map is in good condition with minor foxing at places. Original plate mark is visible. Thomas Gamaliel Bradford (1802-1887) was a Boston-based map publisher best known for his "important contributions to American cartography, the 1838 "Illustrated Atlas Geographical, Statistical and Historical of the United States and Adjacent Countries." Unlike many other atlases of the period, the volume included extensive text on the history, economics and geography of the areas mapped. His atlas represented an important contribution to American cartography, as this fine map clearly demonstrates. (Inventory #: 269670)
