A fairly early reference in American children's literature to the jack o' lantern, with a boy carving a pumpkin on the front cover and another illustration of several completed jack o' lanterns. The volume collects verse about various seasons and pairs them colorful illustrations, some of which depict seasonal activities, while others are more fantastical (e.g., a girl standing in a blooming flower looking up at a butterfly her own size), and still others depict anthropomorphized mice.
