Photograph with President Roosevelt and others, described and dated on verso, 1902
by THEODORE ROOSEVELT; ROOT. ELIHU
The 4.5 x 3 inch silver gelatin photograph, on gray board shows President Roosevelt standing outdoors, Secretary Root to his right and several others. Mrs. G. W. Kellogg "of Rochester" notes on verso that she made the print and describes the image after identifying the people in the shot. "View taken on battlefield of Cedar Mountain, VA., Nov.2 , 1902." She notes the negative was made by Mrs. Frances Boddie. The Nobel Peace Prize 1912 was awarded to Elihu Root, but he received it one year later, in 1913. During the selection process in 1912, the Norwegian Nobel Committee decided that none of the year's nominations met the criteria as outlined in the will of Alfred Nobel. According to the Nobel Foundation's statutes, the Nobel Prize can in such a case be reserved until the following year, and this statute was then applied. Elihu Root therefore received his Nobel Prize for 1912 one year later, in 1913.
