The author Frank Heath Alfriend (1841-1887) was an author, newspaper reporter, and teacher. Alfriend became the editor of The Southern Messenger in 1864. He varied the format somewhat and contributed a significant amount of writing to it during the following months, including much on the War. At the time of his death in 1887, he was assistant librarian for the US Senate. Alfriend is primarily remembered as a friend and and sympathetic biographer of Jefferson Davis.
