Speakers included Lawrence Clark Powell and a host of librarians, booksellers and Los Angeles publishers. Among the articles are: "The Old Mission Libraries of California" by Maynard Geiger; "Libraries of Gold Rush California" by Hazel Pulling; "Book Collectors and California Libraries" by Lawrence Clark Powell. In addition, articles by Sydney B. Mitchell and many others. A full page ad by the Southern California Group of the American Booksellers Association of America (ABAA) listing twenty-seven ABAA members with open stores all of whom are gone except Dawson's. Besides the venerable Zeitlin & Ver Brugge, there is Kurt Merlander, Kurt Schwarz, Bennett & Marshall, Maxwell Hunley, Nick Kovach and many others. Edith Coulter's article "Collecting California at the University of California" starts with the acquisition of Alexander Smith Taylor's personal library at Monterey in 1855, in June 1897 the Robert E. Cowan Library (which came via a purchase by Collis P. Huntington) included 3,300 pamphlets, 12,000 pages of manuscripts, and miscellaneous ephemera ranging from maps and newspapers to early Spanish newspapers.
