Mogvntiæ [i.e. Mainz]: Sumpt. Ludovici Bovrgeat; Typ. Christophori Kuchleri, 1668 A later collective edition of this attractive and popular series of emblem books, uniting the four sequences: I. Stirpium; II. Animalium quadrupedium; III Volatilium & insectium; and IV: Aquatilium & reptilium (Trees and plants; animals; birds and insects; fish and reptiles). Small octavo. 16.5x9.5 cm. Four parts in one volume. Pp. , 201, , 204, [4(blanks)], 204, [4(blanks)], 200 [lacking final page of text]. Engraved title, illustrated with four hundred circular emblematic text engravings within 7.5x7cm frames (all present). Sympathetically rebound in full leather. Leaves a bit toned or lightly spotted. A very nice copy. The 400 charming circular emblems employ a combined technique of etching and engravings and are ascribed to the Nuremberg artist, Hans Sibmacher. The author, Camerarius (1534-1598), the son of the German humanist, was a practicing physician and botanist, and served as dean of the medical college at Nuremburg until his death. This work, each part originally published separately and in sequence in Nuremburg 1590-1604, prints each emblem accompanied by a Latin distich along with an essay in Latin. It proved a model for further works in the genre, including a continuation by Jacob Bornitz. The fourth part, devoted to aquatic animals and reptiles, was published posthumously under the supervision of his son, Ludwig Camerarius. [Brunet I: 1513; OCLC: 17421505].. (Inventory #: 7922)
