S. Hurok presents Marion Anderson America's Great Singer. Souvenir program
by ANDERSON, Marian 1897-1993
1948. Following studies with Giuseppe Boghetti and Frank La Forge, Anderson's "European début took place at the Wigmore Hall, London, in 1930. She was subsequently lionized throughout Europe, winning from Toscanini the reported tribute: ‘A voice like yours is heard only once in a hundred years'... After leaving the Metropolitan in 1956, Anderson continued her concert career, making a farewell tour in 1965. Her voice was a rich, vibrant contralto of intrinsic beauty. She left recordings covering every aspect of her repertory. Her lieder, though hardly idiomatic, are deeply felt, while in spirituals she is compelling." Max de Schauensee and Alan Blyth in Grove Music Online.. Quarto.
