Toronto, 1858. 425pp. plus two folding maps. Original printed wrappers bound into half morocco and marbled boards, spine gilt. Minor wear. Wrapper chipped and soiled, with contemporary inscription. One map laid in, with slight loss to inner margin, not affecting the engraving. Other map with small tears at fold lines, some repairs to folds with archival paper, lightly foxed. Internally very clean. Very good. An important work for the surveying of central Canada, being the narrative of an expedition undertaken in the summer of 1857 which became known as the Red River exploring expedition. The expedition was continued in 1858 as the Assiniboine and Saskatchewan exploring expedition. "Under a letter of instructions dated Toronto, 22 July 1857, George Gladman was put in charge of an expedition to the Red River Territory, others in the party being Prof. Henry Youle Hind, 'Geologist and Naturalist,' S.J. Dawson, Surveyor, and W.H. Napier, Engineer. Their reports on the expedition, dated from 19 August 1857 to 17 February 1858, are given at pages - 136, with Hind's final report on pages 136-158 and 189- 425. Pages 159-188 give various letters and memoranda dated mostly in March and April 1858, relating to the 1858 expedition of which Gladman was not a member.
