ORIGINAL HAND-CORRECTED TYPESCRIPT FOR HIS HOLLYWOOD ESSAY: "HORIZONS LOST and FOUND" By the Author of "Lost Horizon" & "Goodbye Mr. Chips")
by Hilton, James
Hollywood, CA, 1937. Hilton, James. 1900-1954. Author of "Lost Horizon" and "Goodbye Mr. Chips, screenwriter of "Mrs. Miniver." ORIGINAL HEAVILY CORRECTED TYPESCRIPT FOR HIS ESSAY "HORIZONS LOST AND FOUND" [n. p., n. d. but Hollywood, California, 1936]. Five pages total: three pages, the complete essay, accomplished on ordinary yellow typing paper -- typed by Hilton himself and revised extensively in black ink. Two further pages of holograph notes re: this manuscript included, also typed and corrected by Hilton. "Horizons Lost and Found" was published in STAGE: The Magazine of After-Dark Entertainment, a monthly periodical, in February of 1937. We know of no other essay of his that is so representative of Hilton at his most stylishly witty, smoothly conversational, and sophisticated best in private hands; here is an opportunity to own, direct from his files, an artifact which contains his own assessment, or snapshot, of his career at its peak. This essay, unlike almost all of his other prolific reviews, speeches and journalistic concoctions, contains specific, fresh and thoughtful references to Goodbye Mr. Chips, Lost Horizon, film director Frank Capra, his screenplay collaborator Robert Riskin, and Hollywood Life in general. While James Hilton was a generous signer of books, his manuscript material is rarely seen. Ex- James Hilton Estate Sale (Christie's Los Angeles, 1999). The typescript is accompanied by an original essay by Hilton-scholar Kurt Kausler entitled "Center Stage: James Hilton at the Pinnacle" and has been placed in a custom binder along with a cornucopia of hard-to-locate Hilton research material related to "Horizons Lost and Found." Unique.. Signed. Original Manuscript. Unbound. Near Fine. (Inventory #: 002122)
