1959. American soprano Margherita Roberti was born in Iowa as Margaret Roberts. She made her debut with the St. Louis Opera in 1954. In 1956 she went to Italy, where she adopted her Italianized stage name. From 1957, she sang at La Scala. She made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 1962 as Tosca..
