Men and Memories of San Francisco, in the "Spring of '50."
by Barry, T. A. and B. A. Patten
San Francisco: A. L. Bancroft & Company. Good. 1873. First Edition. Hardcover. Dark green boards with gilt title on front and spine. Boards are moderately rubbed, corners bumped as is the spine. Some foxing, especially to the fore-edge but does not intrude into text block. Previous owners bookplate and bookseller label inside front board. 1 1/2" x 3/4" chip missing from front paste-down. Hinges and binding remain tight. Pages are lightly browned. Corners missing from last two endpapers. 2 plates as called for in Howes are not present. Some dealers dispute whether the plates ever existed but our copy appears to have had a page removed where the frontis plates may have been. A somewhat romantic view of San Francisco in 1850. And as the author states in the second paragraph, "Disappointment may await the reader who expects any literary merit in these pages..." , but goes on to record many place names and locations of businesses and citizens of note. Howes B-192; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 296 pp . (Inventory #: 012286)
