ISBN: 0868460567 From forward: "The South African Air Force has an illustrious history. The feats of its airmen and machines in times of war were sometimes matched but never surpassed by those of other comparable air forces. The archives contain several testimonials to this effect from distinguished leaders in wars in which the SAAF participated. When reviewing a particular campaign, students of military history often ask 'What if …?' or 'What if not …?' and try to surmise what the course of events would have been if a certain action had or had not been taken. Such questions may be asked about one feat of the SAAF above all others perhaps. That was the 'Boston Shuttle Service' in the North African desert in early 1942. Nazi Germany had not yet suffered a single noteworthy defeat in the three-year old war and Field-marshal Rommel's Afrika Korps was the Allied Eighth Army eastwards towards Egypt. The objective: the oil fields of the Middle East. It was during this retreat that 18 aircraft of 12 and 24 squadrons flew three sorties a day to shower hundreds of tons of bombs on the advancing Germans, eventually halting them in their tracks near El Alamein. What would have happened if the Afrika Korps had not been stopped and they had reached the oil fields? Much the same sort of question can be asked about a number of other contributions by the SAAF in the Second World War and in the anti-communist campaign in Korea. The authors of this book, 'The SAAF at war 1940-1984' do not concern themselves with such speculation. They are not military scientists but aviation enthusiasts who have recorded for posterity many 'of the exploits of South African airmen and their ground crews during the Second World War and Korea. Some of the stories told here in words and pictures are hardly credible but nevertheless well authenticated. Many of the pictures have never been published before. There is no doubt that this volume is an important contribution towards that full history of the SAAF that may one day be produced. It has been a pleasure to write this brief foreword for a bool< that can readily be commended to all with more than a passing interest in aeroplanes, the SAAF and the defence of their country. It certainly is a volume that l will treasure for the rest of my days as it will always remind me of the exceptional duality of the men whom I have had the privilege to lead during these past four years."
