Berkeley: Poltroon Press, 1980. 2nd edition. One of 10 copies. Cover title. Artist's book, consisting of screened photographic images (including two typewritten letters), printed on irregularly-shaped laminated sheets ; the verso of each sheet features a collage of abstract images, incorporating a captioned label. "No two copies alike", according to "Poltroon's Golden Treasury" (1981). The Poltroon Press bibliography (in "Trance and Recalcitrance" 1995) dates this 1981. A third edition of 13 copies was issued in 1983. Near-fine condition, with some slight bends to the pinked edges. Inscribed by Butler. OCLC records no copies of the first edition, four of this second edition, and three of the third. "This book juxtaposes letters received by Butler from a person who was rather terrifyingly stalking her at the time with photo self-portraits that make pointed references to the avant-garde, including one of Butler holding one of her eyelids open with a large screwdriver. The eccentrically-shaped pages of the book are held together with a metal ring; they are laminated in stiff plastic and trimmed on all sides with pinking shears; the edges pierce the hands when the reader tries to hold and turn them. The images and text are not separable, and the form is entirely linked to the content." Kathleen Walkup, "L.A. Bound," in " Binding Desire: Unfolding Artists Books" Otis College of Art and Design, 2014; Drucker, The Century of Artists Books (1995), pp. 338-339. (Inventory #: 29563)
