DMH. 41 Photostat Reproductions (& 5 more) of drawings done at Pigotts High Wycombe and at Capel-y-ffin Abergavenny Mon(mouthshire) 1937-1939 (cover title)
Gill, Eric. Small folio. Contains 51 photostatic reproductions made by Gill from his own drawings of Dasy Monica Hawkins. All measure approximately 13 1/2 by 9 3/4 inches, with one image slightly longer and folded at the bottom. Manuscript title in Gill's distinctive hand on upper wrapper, followed by manuscript index page, and three loose leaves of notes also in Gill's hand. This is Gill's own copies of the drawings he made of Hawkins, 35 of which appear in Drawings from Life, though reproduced at less than half the size of the originals. This was noted at the end of the unsigned Introduction to the published book, which was supplied by Desmond Chute, which concludes that "it has been impossble in many cases to reproduce much of the finer pencil lines & "shading". The reader's indulgence is asked." Gill's index notes the exact month and year of each drawing of Daisy and reports where some were used outside of Drawings from Life. In a couple of instances, the included drawings were parts of a larger drawing, and in these cases he notes that "the original drawings are in Portfolio in cupboard (the cupboard is labelled 'Joanna')." For drawing number 19B, Gill notes that the original drawing -- a portrait -- was given to Miss Hawkins. Fiona MacCarthy notes that Gill ended up leaving Hawkins all the original drawings for Drawings from Life that remained unsold at the time of his death. Many of these drawings now reside at the University of Texas at Austin's Humanities Research Center. The three separate leaves of notes are also of interest, as they include Gill's list of the originals that were sent off to Dent, and then a second page showing those that were omitted by Dent. The third page presents a list of images that Gill notes "are specially characteristic of DMH." A rich archive that shows Gill working through one of his very last book projects. It is also the only available resource showing the drawings as they were meant to appear. Some light soiling to wrappers, which have been bound with a brown paper spine. Together with a copy of the published book, which lacks its dust wrapper.
