Moral Disquisitions, and Strictures on The Rev. David Tappan's Letters to Philalethes
by Spring, Samuel
Newburyport [Mass.]: Printed and sold by John Mycall, 1789. Hardcover. Good, ffep has tear with piece missing, leather somewhat scuffed but holding firm. Thumb-tear in last leaf with the loss of a few letters, previous owner's signature in front and rear of book, from the year of publication. Rear free endpaper missing. Full brown leather with 6 raised bands and leather label on spine. Tappan's letters to Philalethes are in answer to Spring's Friendly dialogue, in three parts, between Philalethes & Toletus, upon the nature of duty. Errata note and note to subscribers, p. 252. Half-title: Mr. Spring's disquisitions. A very early printing from a Newburyport, MA printer. His earliest activity (Mycall) seems to have been in 1773. He seems not to have printed anything there after 1796. The original owner of this book is William Hills, who purchased it in the year of publication. This is very likely the same William Hills who is listed as having marched to Cambridge in April 1775 as follows: "Vol. 13, page 19. Muster-roll of the several Persons who marched from Newbury to Headquarters at Cambridge, on the Twentieth day of April, 1775, under the command of Thomas Noyes, 3d." Thus, making the owner an early veteran of the Revolutionary War.
