New York: Dodd, Mead & Company. Very Good in Fair dj. 1947. First Edition. Hardcover. [a bit of wear to top and bottom edges, slight bumping to top rear corner, faint dampstain to upper right corner of front cover; jacket dampstained along top edge (mostly on front panel), completely faded at spine, with some rubbing and edgewear and a few tiny nicks]. (cartoon drawings, musical examples, etc.) Idiosyncratic introduction to the history and theory of music, with "a lot of useful and also some curious information" thrown in: "The clever pictorial illustrations and fine musical examples are calculated to stimulate the imagination. A world map serves to illustrate sonata form; an orchestral score has pictures of instrumnets in the key signature. Rules of harmony are given in limericks, and there are numerous lively anecdotes about music and musicians." The Russian-born Slonimsky, who lived to be 101, was a conductor, pianist, and composer, but earned his place in musical history more for his writings and criticism, including his authorship (or editing) of several key reference works in the field. .
