London: MacMillian and Co, 1878. FIRST EDITION. Modern red cloth, gilt spine. Text has minor toning. A very good copy. First edition of an important collection of articles from war correspondents writing for the Daily News chronicling the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. These letters provide the complete scope of the war, from its belligerent beginnings in the Balkans to the fall of Kars. Each account consists of an in-depth report of each major event of the conflict, providing the relevant facts with astute investigative analysis, and all the while supplying an incredibly vivid and genuine picture of the war. Russia and Turkey had been involved in a multitude of international incidents stemming back to territorial conflicts of the 1600's. Over the course of three hundred years, countless battles and border skirmishes led to the events of 1877. Russia, having come to the aid of Bosnia, Herzegovina, and Bulgaria, all of whom were rebelling against Turkish rule, found itself engaged with Turkey for the final time. When the war concluded with the Treaty of San Stefano, Turkey relinquished rule over several Balkan countries and specifically gave autonomy to Bosnia, Herzegovina, and Bulgaria. Forbes (1833-1900) was a celebrated British journalist who made a name for himself with London's Daily News as a prominent and daring war correspondent. He covered the Franco-Prussian war and several wars following, including the Carlist Wars, the Serbo-Turkish War, the Russo-Turkish War, the occupation of Cyprus, the Anglo-Afghan War, and the Anglo-Zulu War. Forbes' daring attitude and investigative spirit earned him much acclaim and celebrity in Great Britain, as well as helped shape the British attitude towards the ongoing military campaigns of the nineteenth century.
