[Virginia, 1862. 6 pencil sketches, of which 2 with watercolor accents; varying sizes, from 3 1/4 x 6 to 8 x 10 1/4 inches. In plastic sleeves taped into paper mats. Old vertical fold lines, a few small chips at edges, minor dust soiling. Very good. A group of six pencil sketches, two with watercolor shadowing, drawn by an unnamed artist for HARPER'S WEEKLY. Two of the smaller images form the basis for engravings in the "On the Road from Washington to Alexandria" collage which appeared in the June 22, 1861, issue. The four larger drawings depict scenes of various Union army activities in Virginia during the early part of the war. All were submitted as potential accompaniments for articles in the periodical, which is justly known for the copious Civil War illustrations that supplemented its text. A full list is as follows: 1) Pencil sketch, 5 x 10 inches, of soldiers of on a country road, captioned: "On the March to Manassas. Union pickets approaching the deserted earthwork at Centerville Va.," with the reverse reading, "I send another package of sketches by same mail". 2) Pencil and watercolor sketch, 6 x 10 inches, of soldiers outside a barn and farmhouse, captioned "Near Falls Church. Picket Guard of Conn. 2nd". 3) Pencil sketch, 4 x 5 1/2 inches, of troops carrying shovels, captioned on verso: "Leaving the trenches. 'On the Road' & c. The men in every variety of costume some in under shirt & drawers & c." 4) Pencil sketch, 7 x 5 1/2 inches, of a field with fortifications and a large army camp in the background, captioned: "... com'd'd by Col. John Fuller. [vi]ew of the Enemy's old fortifications." 5) Pencil and watercolor sketch, 3 1/4 x 6 inches, of supply wagon and encampment, captioned on verso: "'On the road' Lager Bier Wagon". 6) Pencil sketch, 8 x 10 1/4 inches, of soldiers standing near recent construction of long wooden sheds, captioned on verso: "Stables being Erected for Cavalry"
