Enhanced with arguments drawn from canon law, his Adversus Avaritiam outlines reasons to give alms to the church. More interesting, it says parents should bequeath their estates to the Church rather than their children; it is better for children to suffer want in this world to save their parents from damnation in the next. Salvian also has much to say on the duty of self-denial by priests, nuns and monks. Macherentinus, the editor of this edition, was a Jesuit theologian.
