A Preliminary Essay on the Oppression of the Exiled Sons of Africa, consisting of animadversions of the impolicy and barbarity of the deleterious commerce and subsequent slavery of the Human Species; to which is added, a Desultory Letter written to Napoleon Bonaparte, 1801
by Branagan, Thomas
Philadelphia: Printed for the author by John W. Scott, 1804. First edition. Hardcover. Good. 1804, First Edition. Hardcover, 12mo., original sheep. Woodcut frontis showing the last embrace of a husband and wife after being sold to different purchases, 'violently separated...never to see each other more.' 282 pp., plus a leaf with ads for Branagan's anti-slavery poem 'Avenia'. The rare errata leaf has been tipped-in to the last page of the ad. A Fair to Good copy. 3 large pieces of cloth tape reinforcing the binding; both board previously detached. Binding cracked at page 112-3, but still intact with a single tie. Pages browned, but the text is still bold and readable and with a minimal amount of foxing. Branagan made a small fortune as a slave trader in Antigua but later converted to Methodism and wrote a series of anti-slavery works. He presented all of his works to Thomas Jefferson who Branagan would later call 'his most generous patron'. An excellent candidate for rebinding.
