Dr. Paul Morthier (1823-1886) was noted Swiss botanist and founder of the Swiss Botanical Society. Morthier served as Professor of Botany for 21 years at the Academy of Neufchatel. He originally studied medicine and became a skilled surgeon. After studying botany with Prof Oswald Heer, he took the professorship in 1862. He was also a noted authority on sponges. .
