TESS OF THE D'URBERVILLES (Three-Volume First Edition; the Very Fine Estelle Doheny Copy)
by Hardy, Thomas
London: Osgood, McIlvaine, 1891. Hardy, Thomas. TESS OF THE D'URBERVILLES. A Pure Woman Faithfully Presented. London: Osgood, McIlvaine, 1891. First Edition, first issue. Three volumes, 8vo, original publisher's sand-colored cloth with gilt decorations and lettering designed by Charles Ricketts. This is the VERY FINE Estelle Doheny copy (Christie's, October 18th, 1988, lot 1384), her bookplate on the front free endpapers of all volumes. Originally the property of The British Club, Malaga, Spain with its bookplate on the front pastedowns. A remarkable set, bright and virtually unworn. Slightly foxed as always, two of the six inner hinges skillfully repaired, one corner just barely bumped. But with the exception of the as new Katherine de B. Parsons copy which we offered in 1994, the best copy we've handled in decades of specializing in Hardy. TESS OF THE D'URBERVILLES is now entering its third century of popularity and critical approval, one of the most enduring novels of the Victorian era. Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) remains the only English writer who is equally considered a literary giant as both novelist AND poet; his female characters are arguably the best drawn since Jane Austen and Charlotte Bronte put down their quills, and his late Victorian subversive story-telling -- the publication of TESS in 1891 shocked, dismayed and forever changed the Victorian reading public with its presentation of a young, innocent and beautiful girl seduced by an aristocratic villain -- made him the direct heir of both Dickens and George Eliot but with fewer pulled punches. Purdy pp. 67-68. Quarter-morocco slipcase. First Edition. Decorative Cloth. Fine.
