William, pastor of the Gold Street Baptist Church, was a long time correspondent of William Carey. The Baptist Church at Gold Street was built in 1801-2. Known for their inhospitality to African Americans, visiting Ethiopian and allied African American parishioners left the First Baptist Church in 1808 (in protest over segregated seating) to found the Abyssinian Baptist Church in 1809 (now one of the most prominent African American baptist churches in the country).
