"The fishing around Lewiston when I was a boy was really excellent … Rock bass and sun fish were our usua; victim with an odd catfish or eel if we were lucky. …"My shooting in Lewiston was much the same as my fishing. Back before the turn of the century there were grouse and quail in that country until hell wouldn't hold 'em. And wild turkey. Plenty of wild turkey. …"Yet in all those years not once did I see a deer. What's more, I never even heard of a deer being shot and brought into town. Not until I moved to Williamsport did I see any deer. By that time each hunting season found bucks hanging in front of the taxidermists' shops and the butcher shops." The surviving manuscript autobiography of noted American angling author John Alden Knight, a highly personal and digressive first draft (in eight chapters, with some light revision) covering the early years of his life, from his birth in Lewiston, Pennsylvania, 30 December 1890, and family background (his father was a former soldier and worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad) -- and of course recollections of early fishing and hunting experiences in chapters 1 and 4 -- up through his education at Cornell and training and service with the U.S. Naval Aviation corps during World War One. Never completed or published, but evidently undertaken at the suggestion of his publishers, this manuscript offers a glimpse into the formative years of John Alden Knight. Cf.
