The leaf is also signed and dated on recto and verso by several other prominent figures of the era, including librettist and producer Oscar Hammerstein (1895 - 1960), composer and songwriter Herbert Stothart (1885 - 1949), producer and screenwriter Laurence Schwab (1892 - 1952) and Polish artistÂ Jan Junosza de RosciszewskiÂ ("Tom Titt"). 20 x 25 cm."Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man" with music byÂ Jerome Kern, and lyrics byÂ Oscar Hammerstein II, is one of the most famous songs from their classic 1927Â musical playÂ Show Boat, adapted fromÂ Edna Ferber's novel.Â The song, written in aÂ bluesÂ tempo, is sung in the show by several characters, but is most closely associated with the characterÂ Julie, the biracial leading lady of the showboat "Cotton Blossom".Kern's first collaboration with Oscar Hammerstein, the popular musical Sunny,Â had played successfully at the Hippodrome in 1926. Returning to London in 1928, Kern saw an even greater success with the London premiere of their watershed musical Show BoatÂ at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane -- from which this iconic song is taken.
