by Lyman, Joseph
Boston: Printed by Adams and Nourse, 1787. First edition. Disbound. Removed, trimmed, half-title soiled, first three leaves detached as one, scattered foxing, but still about very good.. 61 pp. 8vo. Rev. Joseph Lyman (1749-1828) was from Hatfield and like the other prosperous hill towns of Massachusetts, did not offer support for Shay's rebellion, in fact, often preaching against it; so it is no surprise, with the rebellion put down before this sermon was preached, that Lyman wrote "communities constitute certain of their brethren to rule over them: and thus constituted they are the ordinance of the supreme ruler." Sabin 42787. Evans 20469. (Inventory #: 27588)
