Hardcover
1954 · Philadelphia, PA
by Gallatin, A. E.
Philadelphia, PA: Philadelphia Museum of Art, 1954. Hardcover. G+ (sticker residue on front cover, some shelf wear, all pages clear and intact). Tan cloth boards with red lettering on cover and spine, 153 pp., illustrations throughout, most in bw, some in color. Lists 164 works by 61 artists, 18 of whom are American. Includes essays by A.E. Gallatin (The Plan of the Gallery of Living Art), James Johnson Sweeney (Painting) and Jean Helion (The Evolution of Abstract Art as Shown in the Gallery of Living Art). A very nice copy of this memorial catalogue. 7 bw plates of artists at rear. It states that 1200 copies of this catalogue were printed in February, 1940, but several of the works in the American section date from 1940-1942, so this may be a 1943 edition (this date is in parentheses next to American Section at the top of the page). An earlier edition is identical but lists only 153 works, including at least one (Composition, by John Xceron) which is absent, as is any other work by this artist, from the previously described catalogue. "In January, 1943, the collection was transferred from New York University to the Philadelphia Museum of Art."--Slip inserted over title page.
