London: John Baskett, 1723. A contemporary, fine binding. All edges gilt. Silver corner guards and central medallions on both covers. Cover designs in gilt fillets, floral tooling. Spine in eight panels, heavily decorated in gilt floral motifs. Old marbled endpapers, lightly frayed at front fore-edge. Front joint slightly weak at bottom but cover is firmly attached. FORE-EDGE PAINTING OF ELY CATHEDRAL showing skyline, cathedral towers, two ladies in foreground. The painting has mellowed, colors just a bit subdued, but still quite vivid and well-executed. Ink inscription on old hand on a front preliminary page dated 1828. Old armorial book-plate on front pastedown. "Wm. Walcot Esq." 2" closed tear a bottom of the first page of the Psalter has been repaired with archival tape. Contains 48 full-page engraved plates. Plate borders and text with rubricated border fillets throughout. Bound-in is also "A Companion to the Altar: Shewing the Nature and Necessity of a Sacramental Preparation"... dated 1723 and printed for Edward Parker, at the Bible and Crown, London. This is a lovely example, finely-bound, with silver embellishments, AND a fore-edge painting. The original "Book" was published in 1549 during the reign of Edward VI, and was a product of the English Reformation, following the break from the Roman Church. See photos please.. Early Edition.
