Los Angeles: S and S Enterprises. Very Good+ in Very Good dj. (c.1977). First Edition. Hardcover. [light shelfwear, a bit of spotting to top edge of text block; jacket has a few tiny nicks and tears along the top edge and elsewhere, a touch of fading to spine]. (B&W photographs, facsimiles) Memoir by a baseball catcher, active as both a player and manager from 1931 through 1954, not only in the Negro Leagues in the U.S. but also in Mexico, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Cuba, and Canada. Appearing on many Negro League all-star teams during his career, he was signed to a Major League contract (by the Cleveland Indians) near the end of his playing days, but spent most of his time with their Triple-A farm team. His actual Major League career was pretty short (just ten games with the Indians early in the 1952 season), although in that time he earned the distinction of being (at age 39) one of the oldest rookies in Major League history, and also as one-half of the first black battery in American League history, when he caught part of a game for relief pitcher Samuel "Toothpick Sam" Jones. The book's appendix includes a rundown of Trouppe's career, as well as various interesting lists of players, including his personal picks for the "Number I" and "Number II" team of all-time greats, rosters of outstanding players in the Eastern and Western Negro Leagues, and a 3-page list of "Some, But Not All, of the Sepia Players Who Could Have Played Major League Ball." .
