Quarto, publisher's navy cloth gilt, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, uncut and partly unopened. $2200.Early edition of Hintons popular illustrated history of the United States, with engraved title page, seven folding maps outlined in color, a folding facsimile of the Declaration of Independence, and 58 full-page engraved plates depicting American cities, landmarks, and significant events.An English Congregational minister, Hinton advocated religious tolerance and the abolition of slavery. His popular History and Topography first saw publication in 1834. Many editions followed. Readers especially valued the work for its engravings, 99 of which had been included in the first edition. The work is divided into two halves—History and Topography; ""History"" is continuously paginated in volumes I through IV, and ""Topography"" is continuously paginated in volumes IV through VI.
