1913. A Comedy. In Four Acts. Chicago: The Dramatic Publishing Company, n.d. . Original buff wrappers decorated in brown. First American Edition (technically the American issue of the first English edition). In November 1913 (the month before its own edition was published) Heinemann sent 1000 sets of sheets, complete with American title leaf, to Chicago for this American issue -- where it was bound up as No. 624 of "Sergel's Acting Drama." This copy includes, on the title recto, the rubberstamp "Copyright, 1909, by William Somerset Maugham" -- the date of which caused some confusion to collectors until it was ascertained that 1909 was the initial date of the play's production, as opposed to publication.~This copy's front cover has, at the top, a rubber-stamp price-change (from 50 to 60 cents), and at the bottom, a Los Angeles "entertainments" book store label. It is in very good-plus condition (minor foxing on the first and last leaves, very slight wear at the foot of the spine); it is otherwise unusually clean and unworn for such a fragile volume. See Toole Stott A19 (and also p. 14 and the note to A6b). (Inventory #: 13597)
