The first pamphlet presents a number of clinical trials conducted to confirm the efficacy of ether and chloroform, while the second recapitulates experiments with potential alternatives such as nitrous oxide, chloric ether, and benzoin. These trials proved important in Bigelow's efforts to publicize the surgical viability in the face of lingering doubts from the medical community.
