Fair+ / No Dust Jacket. the following applies to all 4 volumes unless specified otherwise: moderate shelfwear, mostly to edges of boards and along joints, thumb-sized chipping along head edge of Volume 2's spine, long tear (halfway down) front joint of Volume 2, front board of Volume 1 is detached at hinge, but secured on inside and outside with tape, spine is brown leather, all edges of text block gilt. Interior lightly age-toned, end-papers and paste-downs decorated with marbled pattern, almost no foxing, pages are thick, occasional pencil markings, mostly confined to tiny check marks in margins and short notes in small handwriting on back of plates. There are numerous plates throughout the text illustrating characters and places.
