Bookplate designed by Sylvia Rey of Oakland mayor Warren Olney (1841-1921) and his signature inside front board & on ffep. Tiny chips along one odge of spine label else a fine copy with an interesting association. Warren Olney (1841-1921), who formerly owned this book, was an Oakland attorney who served as mayor. He also was an avid outdoorsman, in the company of his friend, John Muir. In 1892, the Sierra Club was founded in his office. He became estranged from Muir and his old comrades after he advocated for the Hetch Hetchy Valley dam & resovoir. Steven's work is curiously ignored by bibliographers Howes, Monaghan, et al.; although Monaghan does cite some articles by Stevens. This is an exhaustive and thoroughly illustrated account of the unfortunate fifteen week conflict between US military troops and the dispossessed Sauk and Fox warriors led by Black Hawk (1716-1838) in Illinois and Wisconsin. With long appendices on the topics of Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis, regarding their involvement in the war. (Inventory #: 16825)
