New York: George Ackerman, 1856. unbound. Color Lithograph. Image measures 9" x 6.5" This 1856 map of Formosa or Taiwan features the entire island in detail. This map appeared in Francis Hawk's 'Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan Performed in the years 1852, 1853, and 1854, under the Command of Commodore M. C. Perry'. The map notes important towns, capes, and topography including the Pescadores and the south eastern coast of China in the top left corner. Perry visited Formosa or Taiwan during his second where he discovered the coal fields identified on this map near the northern cost of the island. Lithography by Ackerman. The map is in good condition with minor foxing and offsetting. Dr. Francis Lister Hawks (1798 - 1866) was an American priest of the Episcopal Church, and a politician in North Carolina.
