The Devil is an English Gentleman [2 volumes, in slipcase]
by Cournos, John
New York: Farrar & Rinehart. Near Fine in Near Fine dj. (c.1932). First Edition. Hardcover. NOISBN . (two volumes, in original slipcase with paste-on label matching the book jacket illustration; slipcase is in VG condition, with some edgewear and some incipient splitting at the bottom corners) [both books are Fine, with the exception of a tiny bit of spotting to the bottom edge of Volume 1; jacket show the tiniest bit of edgewear, mostly along the top edges, but are remarkably clean (having apparently been only rarely removed from the slipcase for their entire existence)] Interesting two-volume novel by this Russian-born writer and translator, whose family moved to Philadelphia when he was ten, but who later lived and mostly wrote in England. The book covers three generations of an aristocratic English family, the Thorleys of Ravenford Manor, with much attention paid to the romantic entanglements of the Thorley men. The plot incorporates a roman a clef portrayal of the author's early 1920s affair with mystery writer Dorothy L. Sayers (which ended badly), and in that sense was a bit of payback for her own unflattering fictionalization of their liaison in her 1930 novel "Strong Poison" -- in which the protagonist, Harriet Vane (an obvious stand-in for Sayers herself) stands accused of murdering the Cournos-based character "Philip Boyes"! .
