N.P.: Privately Printed, 1918. 1st. Paperback. Square 8vo. 37 pp, typescript. Handmade booklet with panoramic photographic image of Brest as the covers held together with fragile silk ties. Minor pencil notations, most likely in Flude's hand. This is possibly the only copy as Flude directs at the beginning of the diary: "This is not to be shown or used for publication. No mention may be made from this diary to anyone of anything pertaining to submarines or military matters. I am writing this simply that Imay have a record with which to refresh my memory a little later when recollections of the voyage grow dim." Laid in is a printed illustrated poem by Flude. Taking place during the waning days of World War I, the diary covers the first month period of Flude's nearly two year overseas service in the Y.M.C.A. war work. Beginning on June 14, 1918, Flude departs from Newport News, VA aboard H.M.T. The Czar, as part of a convey of 13 transports and 12 destroyers. On their first day out, gunners on one of the ships declared they saw a submarine, possibly German, and fired shots and dropped a depth bomb. Over the days at sea, Flude writes of fellow passengers; life aboard the ship; the ship's cargo; marine life and more. Finally reaching land at Brest, France, he makes his way onshore and explroes his new surroundings where "...Everything was strange--an oil painting of one of the old masters." Flude spendsthe three weeks in Brest, exploring the city and surrounding area, commenting in great detail on the sights and people he encounters. Finally, his ship is allowed to leave as part of a larger convoy, going to his next unknown stop. (Inventory #: 17619)
