The Young Wireless Operator -- As a Fire Patrol [*SIGNED*]
by Theiss, Lewis E.
Chicago/Boston: W.A. Wilde Company. Good. (c.1921). Later Printing. Hardcover. (no dust jacket) [pictorial paper label on front cover; book shows wear and moderate fraying at extremities (including exposure of boards at a couple of corners), light fraying to spine ends, soiling to edges of text block but quite clean internally, and overall still a good sound copy]. (B&W frontispiece) INSCRIBED fulsomely and informatively and SIGNED by the author on the ffep. Above the inscription, in a different hand, is written "Delbert M. Mann, Jr. / Jan. 12, 1932"; Mann, the future film director, would have then been just shy of twelve years old, and this probably represents the date he purchased or acquired the book. The author's inscription, dated February 7, 1933, reads in full: "This volume, like many others I have written, is in a sense autobiographical. I spent days and weeks in the Pennsylvania forest before I wrote this book. It was a delightful experience." This was the second in what (I believe) were five "Young Wireless Operator" adventures penned by this author, who had been a reporter and freelance magazine writer before turning to boys' adventure fiction around 1914. (He liked the "wireless" theme, apparently, as there are several other books in his bibliography with that word in the title, but that don't appear to be part of the "Young Wireless Operator" series.) According to his New York Times obituary (1963), he wrote 44 boys' adventure books as well as a history of Bucknell University, from which he had graduated and at which he became a member of the Journalism faculty in 1924. He does not appear to have been a frequent signer of his books, and this inscription is especially nice because of its autobiographical content. Signed by Author . (Inventory #: 22680)
