Title-page vignette portrait of Juan Luis Vives. The first work in Western literature to examine the issue of urban poverty and the moral imperative of society to alleviate human suffering through public policy. Originally published in 1526 in Latin as De Subventione Pauperum, Vives' seminal work saw German, French and Italian translations in the 16th century (all rare), followed many years later by this Spanish edition. Juan Luis Vives (1492-1540) was Spanish by birth, originally from Valencia, though he lived most of his life in the Netherlands as an expatriate, after fleeing the Spanish Inquisition. He was educated in France, where he befriended Erasmus; he resided briefly at Corpus Christi College, Oxford; and he wrote several important treatises on philosophy, education, memory and perception, establishing himself as one of the leading humanist scholars of his era. When finally translated into Spanish, Tratado del Socorro de los Pobres became an central text of the Spanish Enlightenment. (Inventory #: 27304)
