Excellent content war-date Autographed Letter Signed
by HALSEY, Thomas Lloyd (1751 - 1838)
Providence, 1814. unbound. 1 page, 9.75 x 7.75 inches, Providence, October 10, 1814, to Captain John Ord Creighton, expressing his concerns about Rhode Island's vulnerability to a British invasion, in part: "...Our fortifications since you left us have gone on rapidly. I presume that they will be completed this week but we shall be in great need of cannon for the works. It would be a great misfortune should the enemy attack Newport with success, that we should not only lose ship guns...of which are in our forts mounted...but also which are not in use. Would it not be best that such pieces as are not wanted be sent on the mainland where the enemy would not get them? Where they would be serviceable here? I mention this to you that if profitable you might influence their removal, without mentioning anybody. We should be very glad to have what guns could be spared, as we are really in want of them. Do you know where they can be obtained? I beg that you would not let this suggestion of mine be known to anyone..." Natural folds and in very good(+) condition. A leading shipping merchant in Providence, Rhode Island during the Revolutionary War who was appointed French Consular Agent. After the burning of Washington D.C. during the War of 1812, Halsey played a big role in building the fortifications that protected Newport. (Inventory #: 273887)
