The author shows how Russian physicians differed in social origin, careers and professionalization from their counterparts in other lands. She studies the publicly employed physicians who became active in social reform and who, under the leadership of the Pirogov Society, formed a unified medical community within the bureaucratic structure of tsarist Russia.
