Blindstamped full morocco
1837 · Baltimore, MD
by Wirt, Mrs. Elizabeth Washington Gamble
Baltimore, MD: Fielding Lucas Jr., 1837. Blindstamped full morocco. Near Fine. Smith, Ann. 56 brilliantly handcolored floral plates, plus hand-colored title and presentation pages, for a total of 58 color plates. Wirt's Flora's Dictionary was issued in a confounding number of editions, each with a widely varying number of plates; this copy represents the maximum number of plates one will find of this work, as well as the finest hand-coloring applied to it. 4to. 26 by 20 cm. 136, 87 pp. (Excluding the plates from the page count.) Each plate comes with a protective tissue guard. The original, or contempoary, binding, with pictorial blindstamped imagery has rubbing along its joints, but remains highly attractive nonetheless with its gilt decoration on the spine, gilt ruling, etc. One plate has a tiny paper hole, not anywhere near the image. Otherwise, the plates and the multi-colored papers are clean. A beautiful copy overall.
