New York: Reynal & Hitchcock. Good. (c.1946). First Edition. Hardcover. (no dust jacket) [external soiling, otherwise a good solid reading copy]. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the ffep: "For Frank with love / and every good wish. / Janet / September 3, 1946." Novel -- apparently the author's first and only -- about a woman who marries a "difficult" novelist, who is then lured back into the sphere of influence of his former publisher, who as it turns out is also his one-time lover, and who for reasons of his own sets about to estrange the couple from one another. Kirkus Reviews praised the book as "an intelligently, intensely developed love story sharpened by a certain sophistication," but Library Journal (quoted by Anthony Slide in "Lost Gay Novels") was a little more blunt: "The theme, though never named, is perversion." The New York Times reviewer tiptoed around the homosexuality theme, while Kenneth Horan, writing in the Chicago Tribune, rather sniffily observed that "the unfortunate[!] subject matter, never yet successfully dealt with outside of a medical treatise, is a hindrance to what would have been a lively story of love in Manhattan to the tune of night clubs, literary teas, cocktail parties, and after the theater routs." (Maybe from the vantage point of Chicago, none of those things ever involved gay people.) Signed by Author . (Inventory #: 22813)
