Two volumes. 8vo, 19th century 3/4 leather and marbled paper over boards; boards becoming loose; chip to top of one of the spines. Needs rebacking and so sold as is; all maps and plates as called for, and in very good condition. xii, 322; 384 pp. The preface states "whilst pious Missionaries are zealously pursuing their grand object--the conversion of the Heathen to Christianity--they are materially contributing to the stores of general Science, and particularly to the advancement of Geographical Knowledge." Final plate of a killed rhino labeled as "head of a unicorn" - so they had a ways to go. Still, an important work for its time, with interesting coloured plates. See: J. R.
