Dell, an American newspaper and magazine editor, literary critic, novelist, playwright, Works Progress Administration author and poet has been called "one of the most flamboyant, versatile and influential American Men of Letters of the first third of the 20th Century".Once Dell settled into the West Village Bohemian circles, he became closely associated with such noted literary figures as Theodore Dreiser, Max Eastman and Edna St. Vincent Millay, radical John Reed and writer Joseph Freeman. The Dell papers are held at the Newberry Library, Chicago.Miriam Vedder, a graduate of Wellesley and correspondent with Katharine Lee Bates, had her poetry published 29 times in the New Yorker magazine. She was the first recipient of the John Masefield Poetry Prize at Wellesley.
