First edition: Never bound, untrimmed copy of these pieces opposing the Civil Constitution of the Clergy and the French Church. The Lettres were anonymously issued but written by Père Bernard Lambert, a Dominican monk and author of Traité dogmatique et moral de la justice chrétienne and Exposition des predictions et des promesses faites a l'Église pour les derniers temps de la gentilité.
The Lettres are not widely held in the U.S.; WorldCat locates => only two American institutional holdings. The main title-page of this copy bears "An 3" (i.e., 1794/95) in an early inked hand, along with additional inked information regarding the place of purchase. Present here are the first, second, and third letters of the original gathering; the fourth, printed separately, is lacking.
Dictionnaire de bibliographie catholique, 1353. Stitched as issued; edges untrimmed and somewhat ragged; Quatrième lettre lacking as above. Each letter with pencilled monogram in upper outer portion; main title-page with annotations as above. One page in letter 2 with single-word inked correction. Pages mildly to moderately age-toned with occasional minor spotting. => Uncommon, especially in this untouched original state. (Inventory #: 37296)
