The story line of Northern Exposure centers on the character Dr. Joel Fleishman (Morrow), a somewhat uptight born and bred New Yorker who, upon graduating from medical school, finally gets around to reading the fine print of his scholarship and realizes that he is contract bound to move to the remote Alaskan town of Cicely (population 215), where he must begin a four year practice. Once there, he is welcomed by the peculiar locals who offer him the kind of extraordinary experiences and opportunities he would have missed had he opted for a more ‘normal’ life.
