Boston: William D. Ticknor, 1838. First edition. 2 vols. 8vo. each removed. First edition. 2 vols. 8vo. His first published poetry was included in the Portsmouth Journal in 1837 but he drew more attention when, on September 13, 1838, he delivered his "Anniversary Poem" to the Boston Mercantile Library Association. He joined Ticknor as a junior partner in 1839
Field's "Anniversary Poem" was apparently issued bound with Edward Everett's "An Address, delivered before the Mercantile Library Association, at the Odeon in Boston, September 13, 1838" (BAL). Here is offered removed and seperate. He was 18 years old and had that year published a poem in "The Gift." This work precedes "Poems," generally recognized as his first book, by eleven years. BAL 5903 (Inventory #: 308342)
