The Chicago-born author's first book, "a delicate novel of unusual love" about a Danish servant girl and her life in a household consisting of a young widow whose husband died in the war, her baby, her two brothers, and an elderly uncle. (The novel's action is all compressed into a 24-hour period.) The author was the wife of naturalist and fellow writer Donald Culross Peattie, with whom she occasionally collaborated. .
